Connecticut Background Check Laws and Other information about Firearms
-Connecticut is a Point of Conduct State: This means they conduct their own background checks within the state that do no check for criminal history in other states
-In some towns, once you apply for a firearm permit you have to obtain three letters of recommendation, your fingerprints are checked by the FBI and the state and that person's name and date of birth are verified in a state database to check if they have any criminal charges or past mental illness
-Connecticut requires background checks for private sales although the federal law does not
-Connecticut does not require firearms to be stored safely or have a limit to how many can be purchased by one individual
-You must meet the following requirements to obtain a firearm permit
a) 21 years of age
b) Legal residence in the U.S
c) Has a residence or business in the state in which they are applying
d) Intends to only use the firearm for lawful purposes
e) Is a suitable person to receive the permit
f) Successfully completed an approved handgun safety course
g) Has not been convicted as a delinquent for the commission of a serious juvenile offense
h) Has not been discharged from custody within the preceding twenty years after having been found not guilty of a crime by reason of mental illness or defect
i) Is not subject to a restraining or protective order issued by a court in case involving the use , attempted use, or threatened use of physical force against another individual
j) Is not subject to a firearms seizure order issued for posing a risk of personal injury to self or others
k) Is not prohibited from possessing a firearm for having been adjudicated as mentally ill or incompetent under federal law
l) Has not been convicted of a felony or violation of
* Criminal possession of a narcotic substance
* Criminally negligent homicide - assault in third degree
* Reckless endangerment in first degree
* Unlawful restraint in the second degree
* Stalking in the second degree
Survey Results
- 78% of 57 people surveyed agreed that requirements that only allow for a certain number of firearms to be purchased per individual should be set
- 91.84% of those who were surveyed agree that Connecticut should impose a law that requires firearms to be stored safely in a secure place within a household
-100% of the people agree that a universal background check system should be set in place so that the background check process is the same in each state and it will also check for past criminal records in other states as well
-65.8% believe that a person should not be able to use their gun permit regardless of the different background check standards set in each state

-Records of all gun sales must be maintained
-An Estimated 40% of all firearm transfers in the U.S are from private sales
-Criminals can obtain firearms easily through private sales because federal law does not require background checks on private sales, however some states such as Connecticut, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island and Washington all require background checks at private sales for all types of firearms
-Since 1994 when background checks were first implemented, over 2 million prohibited individuals have been denied a firearm permit or transfer
